These unusual properties, ideal for everything from romantic breaks to family holidays, have a wide appeal. They are a pair of mid-19th century semi-detached miners’ cottages (Nant and Craig) that have been immaculately and sensitively renovated to bring them back to their original appearance but with all modern comfort and convenience.

It was a true labour of love. Unique features like Nant’s timber staircase were painstakingly preserved, front doors were copied from old photographs, local craftsmen were employed and reclaimed material used wherever possible. If you know Fiona Rickson this will come as no surprise. She is an indefatigable ambassador for all things Welsh, and shares her passion and local knowledge with guests. Many self-catering hosts are hands-off. Not Fiona. She welcomes guests with fresh flowers, tea and home-made bara brith cake. In summer there are fresh herbs and a pot of honey from her beehives.

Welsh artefacts and items - from bedspreads to lovespoons, paintings to poetry - feature throughout, adding to a strong ‘Sense of Place’, though it’s fair to say that no Welsh miner enjoyed such luxurious accommodation. It’s an award-winning formula that really works. "Fiona goes out of her way to be helpful and her local knowledge is vast," is a typical comment from happy guests. Cycling and walking are two local specialities. The cottages are fully equipped for both (including bike washing facilities) - and Fiona, being Fiona, will even lend you a bike free of charge.
