Romance drips from the ancient woodland surrounding Mill Cottage. Falling asleep to the gentle lullaby of the River Wye, eating breakfast in the dappled shade to the birdsong soundtrack, and reading a novel as the fire crackles are one of life’s forgotten pleasures. Time stands still here; the only constant is the relaxing burble of the gently flowing waterfall literally a stone’s throw from your front door.

Mill Cottage has been skillfully and painstakingly restored to become a wonderfully private getaway for two. Think exposed thick stone walls, aged oak floors, and a dreamy inglenook fireplace complete with welcoming wood burning stove. We loved the cool country chic styling with uber-cosy wraparound leather sofas, modern Melin Tregwynt cushions and throws, and local art on the walls enhancing the sense of place. The gloriously starry-eyed bedroom has a huge wrought iron bed, more exposed oak flooring and beams, opulent 400 thread count bed linen. The soothing sound of the river provides a suitably comforting backdrop to the stunning views out over the trees to the Black Mountains beyond. There’s even hot water bottles to hasten the onset of blissful deep sleep.

The kitchen picture windows bring the views of the River in, and, in the summer, throwing the windows wide open fills the cottage with fresh air, fresh scents and the freshest of revitalizing soundtracks. There’s a classic glazed and well-equipped dresser, all the mod cons and comfortable seating for four. The welcome basket overflowing with local goodies and holiday essentials even tempted us to try the local cider. The free-range eggs, yummy fresh bread, sausages and bacon make for a memorable first breakfast or perhaps a delicious alfresco dinner cooked on the barbeque after a saunter to the fabulous Rhydspence Inn just a few minutes’ walk up the road.

There’s a stretch of coveted trout and salmon fishing direct from the door. It’s very tempting not to leave the cottage during your stay, but you’d be missing out on some of the country’s most breath-taking countryside, there’s hill walking, glorious cycling, exhilarating riding, challenging canoeing and of course, mooching around the antique shops and book shops of exploring the famous book town of Hay on Wye.

Mill Cottage is the ultimate getaway for two, a place for time together. Its cosy, toasty warm, secluded and sexy. The perfect escape for romance.
