Upcoming Festivals and Events - Summer 2018

One of the best things about summer – beyond the Pimms and ice cream – is that we can spend so much more time outside exploring our beautiful country. If you’re happiest in the sun and you’re looking for ways to keep busy this summer (that lets you venture beyond the beer garden or the beach), then check out this list of upcoming festivals and events coming to Wales. From foodies to music lovers, there’s something for everyone!

Festival

The Gower Festival, 2nd-14th July

The Gower Festival has run for over 40 years, bringing music from around the world to the Gower Peninsula in South Wales. What makes this festival unique is that each event is held in one of the region’s historic churches, uniquely atmospheric settings with fantastic acoustics.

This year, the festival is dedicated to the First World War, which ended 100 years ago this November. Expect to encounter piano solos, folk, classical guitar, choirs, quartets, and the specially composed Armistice Suite.

Cardiff International Food and Drink Festival, 6th-8th July

What better way to spend a weekend than by tickling your taste buds at a sprawling waterside food festival? The Cardiff International Food and Drink Festival is taking place at Roald Dahl Plass in Cardiff Bay, and will feature a Street Food Piazza, Producers' Fair, and Farmers' Market. Pick up local produce, sample exciting artisanal bites, and fill up on the best street eats in Wales.

Royal Welsh Show, 23rd-26th July

The Royal Welsh Show is a huge event on the calendar of British farmers and centres on live stock competitions. Beyond that, it’s a fantastic family day out where you can try your hand at a number of exciting activities.

Head to the showground at Llanelwedd and you can watch the displays and competitions, browse the delectable treats at the food stalls, and try your hand at forestry activities, such as pole climbing and wood chopping. Your little ones will love the kid-friendly attractions and workshops on offer.

Llangollen Bike Festival, 4th-5th August

Fans of two-wheeled action will love the Llan Bike Fest, held over a weekend in early August at the Royal International Pavilion on Abbey Road, Llangollen. There's motorcycle-related fun and entertainment for all ages on offer, with stunt teams and trials riding as well as a simulator for newcomers to biking. Kids will be well catered for, with a funfair on site and facepainting stalls.

The Big Cheese, 27th-29th July

If you’re a cheese lover, you can’t miss The Big Cheese, a free, three-day event that is coming to Wales at the end of July. Not only will you encounter a cheese market and over 60 food producers, you can also get involved in the Big Cheese Race, enjoy live music, a funfair, and firework displays, as well as historic re-enactments and educational shows.

This cheesy event takes place in Caerphilly, against the backdrop of one of the largest castles in Europe. With so much to see and do nearby, it’s the perfect way to spend an action-packed long weekend.
