Cwm Pelved House

Near Hay-on-Wye

Just listen, that’s the sound of silence. The drive up to Cwm Pelved gives only a passing hint as to how peaceful and private the setting of this meticulous ‘barn-to-contemporary-luxury-cottage’ conversion really is. It’s probably not ideal for low slung sports cars, but if you look in your rear-view mirror as you drive up you’ll see what makes this place unique. The stunning wrap around views over the Wye Valley are unbeatable.

Map of South Wales

Once you pull onto the crunch of the graveled courtyard with its ancient Ash tree as its centrepiece, it’s clear that Cwm Pelved has been restored by a trained eye. The original collection of barns is clustered together to make an expansive horseshoe, and space to breathe for large groups abounds. The double height hallway with its exposed oak tresses and beams, mighty flagstones and ledge and braced doors is an appropriately grand welcome to this historic fifteenth century house.

There are six generous bedrooms in the three buildings, all connected by clever glass walkways. Each wing has its own unique character, and with such roomy entertainment space, the house is as equally perfect for grand celebrations and joyful gatherings, as it is for intimate getaways and dreamy winter breaks. The sumptuous bedrooms, cleverly placed at either end of the house, are separated by a huge open plan kitchen, complete with snuggly sofas and a toasty wood burning stove, the more traditionally styled living area has ancient oak beams and even a piano, as well as the cosy Snug with its enormous inglenook fireplace. To top it all the wow factor is well and truly delivered by the sun-filled conservatory with its convivial refectory table for fourteen, and jackpot views down the valley to the River Wye and across to the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons National Park beyond.

There are four sizeable bathrooms, but our favourite is the ensuite to the master bedroom, boasting a deluxe freestanding roll top bath, carefully placed to allow you to take in the spectacular views as you soak away an invigorating walk.

There’s attention to detail at every turn. Statement pieces of carefully chosen antique furniture, high-end bed linen, colourful artisan welsh blankets and throws, fresh country chic flowers, the party-friendly Aga range cooker, a help yourself herb garden and tons of dry firewood. Cwm Pelved is the country retreat we all dream of.
